Situated 1,113m above sea level Megeve
is the essence of rustic
chic. It has a medieval heart and was,
in a way, the original
purpose-built French ski resort conceived
in the 1920s as a
French alternative to Switzerland's
St. Moritz. Although
Courchevel took over as France's
most fashionable winter
sports resort, Megève's sumptuous
hotels and chalets still
attract plenty of visitors and it has
retained its charm as a
traditional Haute-Savoie alpine village.
The town is
characterised by its wonderful chalet
architecture, steeped in
tradition, which blends perfectly into
the surrounding
countryside. Wonderful mountains for
skiing rise up on both
sides of the expansive high altitude
valley, neither too steep
nor too high (they reach up to 2,525
m), and there is a
charming mosaic of woods and open spaces
against the
impressive backdrop of Mont Blanc.
In fact, the place is a
genuine Garden of Eden for skiers,
snowboarders and other
winter sports enthusiasts.
With some of the most sophisticated
lift systems in the Alps
Megève benefits from few, if any,
queues. The 440km of
groomed piste served by 87 lifts, offers
superb skiing and
snowboarding at all levels. With accessable
mountain peaks
rising to 2350m, snow conditions can
often persist well into
April.
And of course the wide range of other
sporting and cultural
events as well add to the carefully
maintained atmosphere of
savoir-vivre that subscribes
to the magic .....
