Exploring outside the immediate area

Chamonix

Have a day's visit to the town of Chamonix at the foot of Mont Blanc, Europe's highest mountain. Spend the morning in Chamonix shopping and sightseeing. In the afternoon you have the option of taking the mountain funicular railway to the Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice) to explore the glacier, or you can take the world's highest cable car, the télécabine, to the top of the Aiguille du Midi to an altitude of 3842m. The views of the Alps and of Mont Blanc are the most breathtaking you will probably ever see. Chamonix-Mont Blanc is about an hour away.

Annecy & the Lake

Nestling beneath the snow-capped peaks of the Aravis range, Annecy possesses a splendid lakeside setting. Declared in a class of its own in the national prizes for French towns in bloom, Annecy is an historic town of cobbled streets, tiled roofs and beautiful canals. A morning exploring the old town and an afternoon boat trip are highly recommended. If you are feeling adventurous take the D909 road from Flumet which is about 7km further on down the D212 from Megève. Allow 2 hrs if you take this route

Lake Geneva

The French side of Lake Geneva, with its Mediterranean climate, beaches, and spa towns of Thonon and Evian is only one and a half hours away. The charming medieval walled town of Yvoire also makes a highly worthwhile visit. The journey to the lake is very interesting and very winding if the route through the mountains from Cluses is taken. Set aside a full day for this. Take bottles with you if you want to sample the real Evian water from the well just below the balcony in the photo.

Return to Town

If relaxation is on the agenda then wander into the village (only 600 mtrs) and explore the old stone bridges, fountains, and beautifully restored old buildings lining several narrow cobbled streets, then on to the town square to enjoy a glass of wine in the sunshine.
